Doula Training Scholarships

There are a limited number of birth  doula training scholarships are available to qualified candidates. Scholarships do not cover the full cost of training. Nor does the scholarship does not cover any of the certification process with DONA International.

In exchange for training, scholarship recipients agree to provide volunteer services by helping to assist at a future birth doula training or childbirth training lead by Robin Elise Weiss within 12 months of your training. This training will be held in the Louisville area. There may be other skills and services that Robin is willing to barter in exchange for the training.

If awarded a scholarship, you will be asked to sign a contract that summarizes your agreement to these requirements. We ask that all applicants give serious consideration to their ability to follow through on this commitment in a timely manner.

Applicant Qualifications

  • Have demonstrated an interest in working with pregnant women or new moms and babies.
  • Demonstrate financial need. Scholarships are limited to those who cannot otherwise afford to take doula training. You must be low income to apply–see the Income Guidelines below.
  • Have an email address that you check regularly (at least 3-4 times per week)
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a high school graduate or GED
  • Plan to continue to reside in Kentuckiana long enough to fulfill your volunteer commitment
  • Have transportation available both for the training and for the volunteer commitments
  • Be available for all training dates
  • Commit to helping to staff a training within 12 months of your training in Louisville
  • Birth services are hard work.

Income Guidelines

We recommend that doulas offer free services to families whose income is at or below 185% of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines.  We also use this criteria to determine income eligibility for our scholarship applicants.

Notification of Scholarship Status

  • Confirmation of receipt of your application will be via email, typically within 1 week.
  • Within one full week following the application deadline date for each training, we will make our decision and you will be notified, one way or the other, of your status. Typically, this will be three weeks prior to the training. All applicants will be given equal, unbiased consideration, regardless of when your application is submitted, as long as it is prior to the deadline.
  • Please do not call or email to inquire about your scholarship status. All candidates will be notified by email, one way or the other, precisely three weeks prior to the first training date.
  • All scholarship recipients will be required to confirm acceptance of the scholarship terms via signed contract, by the deadline date listed in their notification email. Failure to do so will result in forfeit of the scholarship. Failure to do so twice will result in exclusion from future consideration as a serious candidate.

To Apply:

Send an email to robin.e.weiss@gmail.com describing your interest in helping families, your experiences in birth (if any), why you should be chosen for the scholarship, and how much of a scholarship you are applying for in the application. You should also indicate any bartering requests.

What’s Next?

After training, scholarship recipients will be provided with instructions for completing their volunteer commitment.
